In my last post I forgot to mention that there is also a new season of Ikkitousen (great guardians) in addition to Slayers and Zero no Tsukaima which is an even guiltier pleasure of mine than those series. For no discernable reason the 2nd season of Ikkitousen (say what you will about me for watching the 2nd one after the first was so terrible) uplifted my spirit at the end. I really don’t remember what it was, something one of the characters said maybe, it doesn’t matter much.
And as to anime series that have new incarnations which I had forgotten about (I haven’t watched any of these), there is Macross Frontier. I frankly do not care about Macross. I enjoyed each incarnation of it in their own time and way but this “bringing back” of otherwise dead mecha series has gotten old. Mostly because the reincarnations are pretty lousy whether the originals were or not. In that sense I feel like it was too late for Macross. But who knows, maybe some day I’ll check it out and it could be good. I sincerely doubt it will be that good though.
Thinking about it for a moment, as far as I’m concerned I simply know too much and have become too cynical to abandon myself to the kind of enjoyment I used to experience from “regular” fiction. Now it seems like the only things I get a kick out of are really fucked up shit and near or totally absurd works. The works of Mo Hayder being examples of the former and the american animated series Family Guy being an example of the latter.
By the way there are some other anime series recently that are new incarnations of something. I think there was another Da Capo series last season, and I believe there’s a new “Someday’s Dreamers”, maybe another Rosario + Vampire is lurking in the fall and other crap like that. I tend not to watch a lot of “renai” anime or love comedies, I’m not even sure if anyone still calls them that, so I am less familiar with what are new or original series and which are continuations or retreads (well they’re probably almost all retreads now that I say that).
