I enjoy Code Geass, but because of the strung out production I will never recommend the series to another person unless it actually ends some day and that ending is able to moderately satisfy me.

I loved the special “24th and 25th” episodes of Code Geass “Lelouch of the Rebellion” and I’ve been meaning to give my thoughts on it and the series in general since it aired. Frankly I’m really pissed off about the series as a whole. I don’t know what happened with production on the series that it ended out having 2 recap episodes that were given half numbers and then went 3 months before airing the ending to the first season which only left things on an even more unfinished note. But whatever happened I am angry that even though it’s stupid that they didn’t just create a 50 plus episode series in the first place I will wait with bated breath for the second season/series. I imagine it will have a different title, perhaps it will be the title of one of the derivative manga series of the work? That seems unlikely since those are just roughly the same stories told from different perspectives if I understand correctly (I have only seen a bit of each since I’m not often interested in seeing the same story multiple times outside of a video game with multiple endings).

To express what might be my individual opinion, the main problem with the series story wise is the existence of Suzaku. Past a certain point I don’t know that I really believe that someone like Lelouch who has proven himself able to act ruthlessly on many occasions would have just let Suzaku continue to get in his way as he did. Although it might be less believable that Suzaku would have ever had the opportunity. So either way he is a FUCKING blight. I didn’t appreciate the way that the Sherry situation developed that much either but its start at least was believable.

As a side note the best moment of the special is when Lelouch says that if C.C. is a “majou” then he will become a “maou”. The worst moment is the ending.

Just to air it the characters I like the most are Lelouch, C.C., and Karen. The one I hate the most is Suzaku, followed by Nunally (just to show you what type of person I am but also because I really loved The Count of Monte Cristo), I also dislike Euphemia who reminds me too much of the bad parts of Lacus Clyne (from Gundam SEED, pick your romanization for most of these names).

I actually spent more than an hour writing out a comparison between Code Geass and The Count of Monte Cristo but I didn’t like the way it turned out so I scrapped that and this is what you get instead. Somebody else should do one though, as it turns out it’s been far too long since I read the original work and in the meantime I’ve seen far too many pale adaptations and perversions. Like Gankutsuou for example. What the fuck where they thinking when they made Albert the protagonist and the Count the antagonist? The whole basis of the comparison is that “monte cristo” is the penultimate story of vengeance and that’s the theoretical primary focus of geass (in reality the real focus is Lelouch’s angst). Since I was saying that Suzaku ruins Geass I started to think that he was the big difference between the two works before I realized that the actual difference is Nunally and that Suzaku=Albert. Albert was at best a tool which was used for an unexpected task in monte cristo, the tool part definitely applies to Suzaku, and they are the same type of pathetic human character (that both characters are that way is not necessarily obvious), but since Suzaku is featured prominently in Geass nothing that happens with him is unexpected so much as it’s disappointing. またっく, スザクは本当にまたっくだ.
